What are the common sealing materials for a lift type check valve?

As a seasoned supplier of lift type check valves, I’ve often been asked about the common sealing materials used in these essential components of fluid control systems. In this blog post, I’ll share my insights on the various sealing materials that are widely employed in lift type check valves, their properties, advantages, and applications. Lift Type Check Valve

Rubber Sealing Materials

Rubber is one of the most commonly used sealing materials in lift type check valves due to its excellent flexibility, resilience, and sealing performance. Natural rubber, neoprene, nitrile rubber, and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) are some of the popular rubber materials used for valve seals.

  • Natural Rubber: Natural rubber offers high elasticity, low compression set, and good resistance to abrasion. It is suitable for applications where the fluid is water, air, or non – aggressive chemicals. However, it has limited resistance to oils, solvents, and ozone.
  • Neoprene: Neoprene is known for its good resistance to oil, ozone, and weathering. It can withstand a wide range of temperatures, from – 30°C to 100°C. This makes it a great choice for applications in the marine, automotive, and chemical industries.
  • Nitrile Rubber (NBR): NBR is highly resistant to oils, fuels, and hydraulic fluids. It has excellent mechanical properties and low gas permeability. NBR seals are commonly used in hydraulic systems, fuel systems, and industrial applications where oil resistance is crucial.
  • Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM): EPDM has outstanding resistance to heat, ozone, and weathering. It also has good electrical insulation properties. EPDM seals are often used in water treatment plants, HVAC systems, and outdoor applications.

The advantages of using rubber sealing materials include their ability to form a tight seal even under low compression forces, and their relatively low cost. However, rubber seals may degrade over time when exposed to certain chemicals or high temperatures, which can lead to leakage.

Plastic Sealing Materials

Plastic materials are also widely used in lift type check valves, offering unique properties such as chemical resistance, low friction, and high hardness. Some of the common plastic sealing materials are polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), polyether ether ketone (PEEK), and nylon.

  • Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE): PTFE, also known as Teflon, is renowned for its extremely low coefficient of friction, excellent chemical resistance, and high temperature resistance. It can withstand temperatures ranging from – 200°C to 260°C. PTFE seals are commonly used in aggressive chemical environments, food processing industries, and applications where a non – sticking surface is required.
  • Polyether Ether Ketone (PEEK): PEEK is a high – performance thermoplastic with excellent mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and thermal stability. It can operate at high temperatures and high pressures. PEEK seals are often used in aerospace, automotive, and oil and gas industries.
  • Nylon: Nylon has good mechanical properties, wear resistance, and self – lubricating characteristics. It is relatively inexpensive and easy to machine. Nylon seals are suitable for low – pressure applications in plumbing, pneumatic systems, and consumer products.

Plastic sealing materials provide long – term performance and are less likely to swell or degrade in the presence of chemicals. However, they may be more brittle than rubber materials and require careful handling during installation.

Metal Sealing Materials

Metal sealing materials are preferred in applications where high temperature, high pressure, or abrasive fluids are involved. Stainless steel, brass, and bronze are some of the common metal materials used for valve seats and discs.

  • Stainless Steel: Stainless steel offers excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and good wear resistance. It is suitable for a wide range of applications, including chemical processing, power generation, and food and beverage industries. Different grades of stainless steel, such as 304 and 316, can be selected based on the specific requirements of the application.
  • Brass: Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, which has good machinability, corrosion resistance, and electrical conductivity. Brass seals are commonly used in plumbing applications, where they provide a reliable seal at relatively low pressures.
  • Bronze: Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin, offering high strength, good corrosion resistance, and excellent wear resistance. Bronze seals are often used in marine applications, as they can withstand the corrosive effects of seawater.

Metal seals can provide a robust and leak – tight seal under extreme conditions. However, they are more expensive than rubber and plastic seals, and their installation may require more precise machining and fitting.

Choosing the Right Sealing Material

When selecting the sealing material for a lift type check valve, several factors need to be considered.

  1. Fluid Compatibility: The sealing material must be compatible with the fluid being conveyed. For example, if the fluid is an oil – based hydraulic fluid, an NBR seal would be a suitable choice, while EPDM would be better for water – based fluids.
  2. Temperature and Pressure: The operating temperature and pressure of the system will determine the type of sealing material that can be used. High – temperature applications may require PTFE or metal seals, while low – temperature applications can use rubber seals.
  3. Chemical Resistance: In applications where the fluid contains aggressive chemicals, the sealing material must have sufficient chemical resistance to prevent degradation. PTFE is an ideal choice for highly corrosive chemicals.
  4. Cost: Cost is also an important consideration. Rubber seals are generally the most cost – effective option, followed by plastic seals, while metal seals are the most expensive.
